Island 3 Day 3

Page history last edited by Carlyn Vachow 15 years, 4 months ago

It has been raining non-stop for the last three days and the surf has made it impossible to catch any fish. You have not eaten anything besides rationed fallen coconuts for two days. Not only that, you have a problem with the rising waters of the swamp and lagoon.

We should grab what we have in our shelters and try to find higher ground. On higher land it will be safer because once the lagoon and swamps start to flood all of the snakes and creatures will be flushed out of their homes. The hunters and gathers will need to search on the beach for washed up fish that havent been dead that long so we can cook them. The only problem is that the fish might not be the healthist because they have been lieing on the sand for a while, but we need to eat them to stay alive.

Section [06]

Enact your emergency plan for shortage of food. What can the hunter-gatherers find to eat besides fish or fallen coconuts?

the hunter gatherer's could also find spiders, snakes, berries, boars, any edible plants

Pick three food alternatives from the food bag:

1. Snakes

2. Washed up shell fish

3. Dead boar

1)

The fire is out, both for the rescue and cooking, so how will you consume these three items safely?

We go into one of our caves and create a new fire. The gathers have to scout for dry fire food. Once we get the fire going we can cook all of these meats so that they are safe to eat. If we can't get a fire to start then we can eat the shell fish raw. We can also cure the meat that we have with salt water/brine. To get the venom out of the snake we can gently put pressure on the jaw of the snake and the venom will come out.

List potential dangers from consuming them.

- food poisoning(symptons: nausea, stomach aches, head aches, cramps, diahhrea, fevers)

- diseases that the animal could potentially be carrying

- animal has contamination meaning if they did infact have any type of disease what was it

- when eating a snake, comsuming their venom

     - if so, before you eat the snake you apply pressure to the snakes fangs and let the venom seep out

How much of each item can you gather in the rain?

- in the rain we may not be able to find as many dead boars, but we could find alot of snakes, and wased-up

shellfish

Other back up plans for food shortage?

- move all of our shelter into a cave and start a fire there. So while it is raining, our shelter is temporarily moved

Section [09]

The waters are threatening your shelter. The roof on the girls’ shelter has caved in.

there was not enough rain to completely ruin the supports

along with the caved in roof, we have found that there are leeches in the water... :(

Plan of Action:

  • First we are going to clear out the wreckage
  • we are going to tear down the rest of the hut and build it on posts
  • considering that it is still raining, we are going to set out our pots, pans and hand made containers to collect rain.
  • We will collect some leeches for medical purposes.
    • we can use them to suck out snake/spider venom if someone is bitten
    • they can take down swelling
    • can prevent infection but can also cause infection if detached improperly

Also, there is another issue you must pick out of the problems bag and deal with. ...LEECHES

we have learned how to take care of and detach leaches:

  • Leech care:  http://www.leeches.biz/care-leeches.htm
    • if cared for properly, they will live for around ten years
  • Leech detachment: lemon juice, vinegar, salt (or salt water) or fire.
    • after we use one of these methods, we will clean out the place where the leech was.
    • once the wound has been cleaned out, the person will stay in the ocean (salt water) for a while to make sure that there are no surviving leeches.
  • unless we can learn how to rid our fresh water of leeches, we will avoid our fresh water

1.

List Symptoms/Dangers

-Blood loss from leeches

-disease

-

Section [04]

You finally found some food, which you all ate. The only problem is that one of them has caused food poisoning. You don’t know which.

Pick three symptoms out of the symptoms bag:

1. Diarhea

2. Vomiting

3. Nausea

[Plan of Action to find out which food item poisoned your members]

Our plan would be to have three volunteers to try each of the foods when they have recovered. Once we see who suffers from diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea, then we would know what food that it was.

[Treatment with resources/tools available]

We should not eat anything for a couuple of days with the exception of water. In a couple of days our bodies will flush out everything in our system.

[Waste Management to avoid contagion]  We should throw up and go to the bathroom in the river so that all it will get flushed away into the ocean.

We have a satellite phone. Why don't we call the coast guard.

probably has to something with the fact that there aren't radio towers on the island or something.but hey its just a hunch

we should rebuild our huts a little bit of the ground.if they are made on wooden poles, flooding can't get to our storage and get to our food

I agree with Austin that we should take into consideration the possibility of flooding, but instead of all of our huts to protect the food we could have a storage facility for keeping all of the food and that we be farther away from water so it won't get flooded.

I do not see how we can build storages without the right materials. The only thing we have is a swiss army knife to straighten out the wooden poles.

We are going to have to find a more efficient way to store food. We could try curing/preserving some of our perishables in salt brine from the ocean. Then even if our storage unit isn't super sturdy, we might be able to salvage our food. We could try putting off a part of one of our huts to store food (preferably the main hut).

Er...the council hut

FYI: Island members who have not commented yet or have not contributed to the wiki need to start doing so.
I believe that we are second behind Island 4 and that's because everyone on their island contributes!

Another danger of eating the animals without cooking them would be salmonella. Also with the symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting, we should eat constipating foods so that we don't get overly dehydrated. For example it would be ideal to have bananas on the island because they are constipating.

If we cook them then we wont get salmonella

Carlyn Vachow said

we won't get salmonella if we cure meat either

i agree with clark, if we cook the food then we probably wont get salmonella

How do you cure meat besides cooking it?

Hey guys did you notice this in the first question: "The fire is out, both for the rescue and cooking, so how will you consume these three items safely?" someone used the sentence

"The gathers have to scout for dry fire food."

This probably should be fixed. who every wrote this please revise it and make the necessary edits.

Also the the question says that the fire is out, but not that we can't relight it or build a new one.
