It was a challenge to get work done over the weekend, wasn’t it? Well, each member needs an assigned role. You have already gathered your supplies, explored the island, and created a map. Now you need to make plans for how to survive.

Section [06] Members

Look at the member page again, and add a third column to the member table that will be called “roles.” You should decide based on survival IQ and quality of contributions who will do what. You must also nominate and elect a leader. But first, write job descriptions for each role. Figure out how you will do this so it is fair for the rest of the sections. Remember, every member must still contribute to the wiki in order to get a grade.

Some of the roles you NEED to consider are:  

• Leader the leader will not only have the final say, but he or she will also make sure every member is doing their part and contributing to their project. A leader’s main job will be to leave comments for the other groups. During an emergency, they should be able to order around the people and be in charge without making bad desicions and getting the power to their head. (Clark did this part, he didnt have internet)
• Hunter gatherers In charge of hunting animals, gathering/searchiing for edible vegetation. Search the ocean, forest,and rivers for food.  Ration the amount of food that everyone consumes so that there is a steady supply of food. Food shortage. Attacked by animals or a food shortage are the type of emergencies that would happen that the hunter gatherers could help with.
• Builders/maintainers of shelters: to build a resistant shelter that is large and able to protect humans from the natural diasters.  Keep them renovated and up to scale by cleaning it and keeping it kept well.  They are also like maids and housekeepers because they will clean it for livable conditions.  During emergencies their is an emergency shelter on the other side of the island that is underground.
• Water and firewood gatherers: they collect water from the river and oceans for drinking and making for the food. they also gather firewood for cooking the food. In case of emergency, they will have the abundance of water and firewood because these are two main resources we need to survive with making food.
• Cook- they make the food, they serve out the rations to the people. if there is an emergency they can make a type of food or product that could potetially help the situation.
• Search chief- stands at a high point on the the island and trys to find planes or ships that he can flag down and get the attention of, also advises the leader. (Clark came up with this information, his internet was not working)
• Medic- inspects all the other people for injuries and aids them. An emergency is if someone gets a severce illness that the medic cannot fix and it spreads to the others.

Last tip: it would be useful if the members of the same section are in a similar role, that way you can complete a task together. The leader can be from any section and contribute to their particular group as he or she wishes.

Section [09] Members

First, do you approve of the leader nominated and chosen by the previous group?

If not, nominate a new leader: We have nominated Carlyn as our new leader.

You now have been assigned roles, but for today, you are also the plan builders. You must come up with a plan of action for the following situations:

Medical emergency: [you must specify what is in your first aid kit on Day 1]

100 band aids( with an assortment of sizes), 3 flares, gauzes, rubbing alcohol, tweezers, rubber gloves, burn ointment, sting and bug ointment, solar flashlight, pre-wrap, advil, and athletic tape.

Hunting/Gathering Techniques:

To hunt and gather there will be a few people on the gathering team per day, scouting and collecting barriers and other naturally grown fruits and vegetables. They will climb palm trees to collect coconuts by throwing heavy rocks at the branches of the palm tree to shake the coconuts down. We will use the swiss army knife to cut branches to attach sharp rocks to and tie the sharp rocks on the end to make spears. We will use the fishing kit to catch wild fish and cook it with the flint and steel to make fire. The fishing kit has mini nets, fishing line, hooks, fake fish, and buoys. Also we will use the clams from the island as a protein source. We will use the mini net in the fishing kit to collect minnows to use as bait for larger fish. Also we will swim into the ocean and collect seaweed which we will lie down on the beach and dry out before eating.

Possible Mutiny:

We will tie the offender up to a palm tree using MANY MANY palm tree leaves for two days with little food. Then we will use the conch shell to summon the people. We will have a trial and share opinions about how this should be dealt with. The trial is managed by the leader (if the leader is being mutinied then the next in succession). There will be a majority vote for what actions should be taken.

Possible punishments:

• jail-like separation
• waste clean up
  • like cleaning the fish (or other grosser jobs)
• gathering firewood

     (Punishments like waste clean up or gathering firewood are jobs that other people have. So these punishments      will give those with these jobs a break).

Attempts to get rescued:

We will have a fire burning in case a search helicopter happens to fly over. We will do this by cutting wood with the swiss army knife and start the fire with the flint and steel. We also have the road flares in the first aid kit which could be used to signal helicopters or planes which will be used only if a plane or helicopter is seen.

Tip:  Include how you will use the six tools and your island’s natural resources (as shown in the introduction page) to solve these problems.

Section [04] Members

If not, nominate a new leader:

You now have been assigned roles, but for today, you are contributing to plans surrounding shelter.

• Decide where your shelter will be built (based on the map created by your group; consider how long it takes to get to places and also what kind of problems you might encounter from your island).
• Create a visual model of what your shelter/s looks like.

WHY LIVING IN A MAN-MADE SHELTER IS SMART:

- we build it, so we utilize our builders

- we can select a safe location

- the cave has a river running down the middle of it, which will flood and sweep our supplies and belongings away, and could pose a threat to our well-being

- the cave could collapse on us when we are sleeping in there

- since we are in the equatorial region, there is a monsoon season, which would flood the cave and fill it with water

- the shelter will be located near the beach, lagoon, forest, and river; these four features of our island provide us with many resources. The cave is only near the beach, and is next to the swamp which is filled with snakes and spiders (a health problem)

- the cave could be small and cramped, while if we were to build a structure, it could be as big and safe and sturdy as we need

- planes flying overhead will not notice a cave as a sign of live; but the houses and fire of the man made structure could attract them to save us

- the cave cannot hold fire, as it will fill the cave with smoke

The huts would be made out of wood from the forest or the palm tree line. We would cut down the trees with sharp rocks from the lagoon or the river. The builders would build them. The wall is optional, and would be made out of rocks and sealed together with mud. The roofs would be made of palm leaves and vines from the forest and the palm trees. The beds would be made of leaves and palm. The fire would need a constant source of ignition, which is why we need to be near a forest. The square on the map demonstrates where we would be located. We are safely away from the swamp which has dangerous snakes and spiders.
