Section [09]

First, view the trailer about Kid Nation.

After watching the trailer, the narrator claims that it the town is entirely run by kids. Is this true?

No, there have to be camra men around them all the time.  There is no way that parents would allow them to sleep out there in the middle of nowhere without adults.  Also there are probly paramedics out there for safty if someone gets hurt just in case.  There were people most likley organizing the town meeting and the challanges.

How do the adults running the show provide Apollonian order for the kids?

They provide Apollonian to make sure the kids arnt getting too out of control.  They organize the meetings and they interview kids.  They provide the challenges which provide the kids with money for their economy.

Take a tally of how many members think they would have enjoyed being part of a program like Kid Nation? Why or why not?

None of us want to be on the show because we get annoyed with little kids.

How does is this similar to Lord of the Flies? How is it different?

Its not that similar becuase these kids still have a lot of influence by adults.  There are also boys and girls on this show.

This is the first time on Bonanza that the council is all male. How do they abuse their power?

Yes this was the first time the council was all guys.  They abused their power by being disrespectiful to the girls.

Why do you think one of the girls compare the council to a Nazi regime?

She relates the council to a Nazi regime because they are trying to control everyone and they dont care what anyone other than them says.

Using the video as an example and your knowledge of Apollonian v. Dionysian, how would Lord of the Flies have turned out different if there had been girls?

I think there would have been more order if girls were on the island because girls are more sensable, but there also would have been more drama.

After watching the trailer, the narrator claims that it the town is entirely run by kids. Is this true?

This is modern day televison which is all about ratings and trying to be the best. Now this show is different in some ways, it is apparently ran by kids and kids only. This is obviously not the case. The reason is these kids do not have medical degrees and are not capable of helping someone in need or hurt. So they would have to have an adult doctor. Plus theses are just kids, there is no doubt that the goverment or anyone would not allow some adult supervision. The camera men are also adults because kids do not know how, so these adults could be helping them or even telling them what to say or do to really make the show tence. Televisions main point is to make the aduince intreasted and kids just running a town is not intresting enough if they don't have problems. Most of the proplems are created by adults, plus when there is some sort of natural disaster the adults must help the kids in case of law suits from parents or anything like that. This is a show trying to test kids and see if they can survive without adults but the truth is we cannot and that is why adults must help us and are helping running the program.

How do the adults running the show provide Apollonian order for the kids?

The adults provide order by providing the basics for the organization system.  Also adults being so close to them prevent them from causing too much chaos.

The adults also help conduct meetings for the kids and interview the kids on how they’re feeling. They also conduct games for the kids, and based their performance, the kids’ jobs are chosen. They also get to choose who gets the golden star and who wins the games. And nobody wants to see chaos on television.

Take a tally of how many members think they would have enjoyed being part of a program like Kid Nation? Why or why not?

About half the people in our group would like to be in Kid Nation, while the other half would not. The people that that think they would like take part in kid nation, is because they think it would be fun to take part in the show, and to meet new people.  The people that would not take part, is because they like order in society and can’t take a day without electronic devises.

How does is this similar to Lord of the Flies? How is it different?

The Kid Nation show is similar to Lord of the Flies because they had to build a form of government and select leaders. Also, the kids on Kid Nation have no contact with parents or the outside world, which is the same as in Lord of the Flies. A third similarity between the show and Lord of the Flies is that some of the kids disagreed with the leader. And on the island Jack disagreed with Ralph. The Kid Nation show is different than Lord of the Flies because in the show, decided who will do which jobs by competing in competitions, and in Lord of the Flies, Ralph assigned the jobs. Another difference is that in the show, the kids have to option to leave if they want to, as opposed to on the island where they could not leave. A third difference is that Kid Nation is in a town setting and Lord of the Flies is in an island setting. In a town setting the issue of building shelters does not apply.

Greg is cursing out the children in the town. According to one of the girls, how does Greg exert power over the town? What is the danger in that?

Greg exerts power over the town through fear. The kids are afraid that he can beat them up because he is strong. The danger in someone having power by being feared is that it is easy for them to get violent if they do not get their way. Also, a person who have power because they are strong can easily become power hungry and make decisions that are not best for everyone.

Which Lord of the Flies character would you compare Greg to? (Mention how ego and id are at work here)

I would compare Greg to Jack in Lord of the Flies because Greg and Jack are both very aggressive.  For example in Lord of the Flies Jack always wanted to be the leader, which would result in him having the conch at his disposal.  Greg has a similar desire, but his desire is for the golden star.  Both think that they deserve these privileges.  Jack and Greg both represent id more so than ego because they resort to more violent feelings, which are less civilized.  This violent behavior, like when Jack lashes out at Ralph during assemblies and Greg’s cursing, causes different disputes within the town and ruins the unity of the townspeople.  It prevents the town from being more organized and from having more ego qualities.

One of the girls says that “the town needs law and order.” How does Greg acting out show that order is breaking down in the town?

Greg acting out is an example of how the town does not have laws and therefore is starting to lack order.  The lack of order is causing destruction in the town’s abilities to work together and get things accomplished.  Greg’s behavior is scaring the young children and is causing many arguments and disputes between the townspeople.  Since there is no order within the community it is invoking fear in the children and causing the town to not function in an organized and chaos free manner.

First, view the trailer about Kid Nation.

After watching the trailer, the narrator claims that it the town is entirely run by kids. Is this true?

Although kids are doing most of the work they are not completely separated from the adults.  If someone was seriously sick, adult doctors would take care of them, not kids.  Also adults gave basic instructions to the kids on what to do.  Any major problems such as fire and violence would be handled by adults.

How do the adults running the show provide Apollonian order for the kids?

The adults provide order by providing the basics for the organization system.  Also adults being so close to them prevent them from causing too much chaos.

Take a tally of how many members think they would have enjoyed being part of a program like Kid Nation? Why or why not?

Out of our group, 4 out of 4 people say that they wouldn’t enjoy being on Kid Nation.  One reason that my group wouldn’t enjoy the show is because they don’t think they are independent enough.  Another reason is because they don’t think they would be able to get along with the other kids and get things done.  Lastly, some of the members think that they wouldn’t be able to handle the work load involved with running your own town.

How does is this similar to Lord of the Flies? How is it different?

The show is similar to Lord of the Flies because they both have kids isolated and forced to make a functioning society without help from adults.  They had to elect a leader, distribute jobs, and worry about getting along with each other.  They ways that they are not the same is the fact that the show is a lot more modernized then Lord of the Flies.  Another way they are different is the fact that on the show the kids don’t have to worry about being rescued.  This was the main concern in Lord of the Flies.

The kids have not had any contact with their parents for 39 days. How do the parents represent civilization? What are the parents’ reactions to the children’s living conditions?

The parents represent civilization because they bring order for that one day that they are there. They respond to the living conditions in shock. They could not believe that their kids had been living in a place like that for 39 days.

How is the ghost town the kids have lived in a liminal space?

The ghost town is a liminal space because it is in between order and choas, and in between childhood and adulthood. These are more about the kids in the ghost town than the town itself, but because the kids have to act as adults would it is a liminal space between being a child and being an adult. By doing this it is also hard to keep order between themselves and choas can start up.

One of the parents mentioned that this was a test of self-reliance for the kids? Do you agree, or do you think the parents had an ethical responsibility in this as well

The parent says that his son’s responsibility and independence. I do not think that this is true. Because this is a reality show, there is always a sense of acting. Sensible parents would not just sign their children off to live in a chaotic and insanitary environment without supervision.
