Island 2 Day 3

Island 2

You have an encounter with the island’s other inhabitants. It wasn’t so friendly. They stole your food, not just once but quite a few times in the last few days.

Section [06]

You will have to do some spy work. You must observe and research some of the customs of the people inhabiting your island. Out of the customs bag, you will select three customs and research what they are. Cite your sources.

[Cannibalism]

Cannibalism or Anthropophagy, by definition is the practice of eating another organism of the same species; cannibalism usually is associated with humans. In history, cannibalism was practiced in most populated, prehistoric civilizations. Cannibalism has been classified as an act of cultural beliefs, relief from extreme starvation and famine, or mental insanity.

[Custom 2]

Stone tools are some of the earliest tools used, besides bones and wood.  These tools started out very rudimentary, but over the centuries became more defined.  Stone tools lasted longer than bones and wood, and were more durable.  One of the most common ways to make stone tools is to chip the stone with flint.  Also some tools were ground against each other to make the tools smoother.  Stone tools could be used for hunting as well as warfare. Some of the tools used for warfare or hunting are arrow points, which we can use to hunt the bores and to fight the other inhabbintants.  We could also potentially use endscrapers to clean animals.  Groundstone axes could also be used for warfare.

[Human Sacrifice]

Human sacrifice is defined as “the offering of animal, plant, or human life or of some material possession to a deity, as in propitiation or homage,” by dictionary.com.  In Asia, children were sacrificed to the goddess Kali.  If the poor children were sacrificed, then it is believed that she will bring riches to the poor children, children to people who don’t have any, and revenge to the people that were oppressed.  Human sacrifice was mostly used in Europe to protect buildings against war, the weather, or the devil.  It is said that the protection comes from the soul from the dead child.  On our island, we may use human sacrifice to bring better luck to us or protect us.  The sacrifice is usually someone who has done something wrong, a virgin, or a warrior that died in battle.

Section [09]

You are the chosen spies. Your mission is to observe the customs from above and decide whether any of them might be useful or dangerous to you.

Useful: The inhabitants have developed stone tools that can prove very useful to us hunting and building stronger shelters. These tools would be very useful to our group.

Dangerous: The inhabitants practice human sacrifice for luck and help from the gods.  This would be a dangerous and un-necessary custom for our group to develop because we do not have many people in our village and are trying to be rescued wihtout any fatalities.  The most dangerou custom that they follow is cannabalism because they eat other human beings and there are only a small amount of people on the island so the chance of one of our members being eaten is high.

You must also answer the following questions:

How many inhabitants are there?

There is somewhere between 50 and 100 of the others.  We are not sure exactly how many of them there are because we have never seen all of them at once. They travel through to the jungle at night hunting while some stay at their village keeping watch over the children so we can’t count all of them. During the day when we went to investigate them we saw them run into hidden caves in the mountains so we think they have their village and the caves as their homes.  This leads us to believe there a lot of them, however they do eat each other so we dont know if that effects their population.

Are they hunter-gatherers or an agricultural society?

The Others are hunter/gather people.  They hunt animals when they don’t have an old person to kill to eat.  They only eat the elderly because they are not useful for working any more.  They gather fruit, berries, and edible mushrooms.

What do they hunt/grow?

The inhabitants hunt other people and meat because they are cannibals.  They have different tase than a normal human and they might want to hunt us so that they can use us as food.  We have seen them fight with eachother  and we actually saw them kill one of the old men because he was no longer "useful in working" and so they killed and eat.  The inhabitants grow fruit on trees however they like to eat meat a lot more.  They also like to hunt other animals for meat.

Draw a picture of their typical tribal wear:

Section [04]:

They caught your spies, and now you have to go rescue them.

First, they don’t speak your language. How will you communicate with them?

We will communicate with the other inhabitents by useing sticks to draw pictures in the dirt displaying what we want to say. We will also act out what we want them to do, and we will bring them oferings of food to tell them that we respect them and that we are peaceful.

Then, form a plan of action to rescue your other team members:

We will journey to the other side of the island where the other islanders are located. We will have hidden weapons so we can defend ourselves if they attack us for food, but they will be concealed so they don’t see us as a threat. We will give them offerings of food and then we will draw pictures in the sand, as a way to communicate with them, so that we can ask for our island members back. If they refuse, we will further the offerings with a live boar for them to sacrifice.

Consider, based on the customs you observed, whether you can give them a gift to appease them, try to make an arrangement to share food, or any other strategy you can think of.

You may NOT: sacrifice any member of your island or go to war with the inhabitants of the island.

Pick an outcome out of the outcome bag

Our plan of action in response to the outcome:

The outcome was the islanders were insulted by our actions.  They released our members, but they continue to steal our food.  We have decided to hide our food in an underground hole covered with palm tree leaves.  Also we are going to have someone guard this hole.  Another tactic we will have is to leave rotten food and left overs out for them to steal.  This ploy will distract them from looking for the real food.

o.k. you are suppose to be keeping up with the wiki during the day, and I decided to extend the voting period until Friday, one period before my English class, so don't complain. I have decided to extend the time period until the end of last period so any comments on voting WILL BE IGNORED BY ME. Unfortunately we have a tie, between Zach Gates and Arun Garg. So now I will start a new vote for the leader between only Arun and Zach. The time limit for the voteing will be our next island day on THURSDAY NOV 6th on when MY SECTION (04) HAS CLASS. CANDIDATES, it would be best to put a comment on WHY YOU SHOULD BE PICKED LEADER. If you have any question, e-mail me on first-class. TO VOTE PUT A COMMENT ON ISLAND 2 DAY 3

alright thats a good idea nick but i have to say this is becoming a larger issue than it should. All we need to do is count the votes up again and see who hasnt voted. This is getting really out of hand and is only causing drama between our islands three groups. We need to make this decision faster without any drama or arguing. Thanks for organizing the votes though.

It was a tie between Zach and Arun, that is why he cannot just count them up.
