First, view the trailer about Kid Nation.

After watching the trailer, the narrator claims that it the town is entirely run by kids. Is this true?

According to the narrator of Kid Nation, the town was completely run and operated by kids. I believe that this is not true. There were adults on the set ,such as the producers, who organized the things such as how the jobs would be distributed on the show, and when to meet in the council. In other words, the adults provided the instructions on how to live inside the town, and it was up to the kids to decide how they would go about following and completing the instructions that were laid down for them. The narrator's claim was false, because rather than running the town themselves, they had guidlines and adults to intervene if anything bad happened.

How do the adults running the show provide Apollonian order for the kids?

The adults running the show provide appollonian order because they are guiding them in what they are doing and how they should fo it. Also if things got too out of control they would stop it, for example there is no way they would ever let anyone get killed on the show. The adults are also controlling the kids to be apollonian because they are giving them things like drinks and food so they do not have to find food. Also they are giving the children something to strive for with the gold star. The adults are definitly providing appolonian order for the kids.

Take a tally of how many members think they would have enjoyed being part of a program like Kid Nation? Why or why not?

How is this similar to Lord of the Flies? How is it different?

The resources are much different then that of Lord of the flies.  Such as they have houses, saloons, a water pump, chairs, pots, and pans.  Also the situation is different.  These children know that they are on a show and if one of them gets ill or fights they will be taken away or broken up.  They know they can leave at any time and return to civilization.  Also the children are constantly beeing watched by hundreds of people everywhere, they know they must act more civilized.  The children of Lord of the flies are completely left alone in their own environment.  They must create their own shelter, find their own water.  The most important thing is the children of Lord of the Flies are completely away from all adults and no one is watching them.

The parents of Kid Nation were criticized for letting their kids be a part of this program. After watching the video, discuss with your group the moral responsibility do parents have in protecting their children and then answer the following questions.

Is there something unethical about letting children be a part of reality television?

What motives could the parents have had in letting their kids participate in this show?

What possible dangers and emotional turmoil could the kids endure by being separated for weeks with no absolute contact with their parents?

After watching the trailer, the narrator claims that it the town is entirely run by kids. Is this true?

No this is not entirely true because the adults on the show step in from time to time to help the kids figure out what they are going to do.  For example, they run the games that help to choose which group will have which jobs and who will earn how much.

How do the adults running the show provide Apollonian order for the kids?

The adults provide Apollonian order by telling the kids what they need to do and giving them options on what they could have.

Take a tally of how many members think they would have enjoyed being part of a program like Kid Nation? Why or why not?

One person wanted to be part of a program like Kid Nation because it would be cool to see how kids would run a town and where you would fit into the town.  Two people said no because it would be chaos since kids really aren't suited to run a town.

How is this similar to Lord of the Flies? How is it different?

It is similar to Lord of The Flies because in both situations young children are placed into a situation where there are plenty of resouces and they must control how to direct their society. It is different because there is some adult interfernce in Kids Nation and they have a lot more rescouces than in Lord of The Flies.

This is the first time on Bonanza that the council is all male. How do they abuse their power?

They abuse their power by not doing anything when everyone needed to contribute or they are saying mindless things that shouldn't be said.

Why do you think one of the girls compare the council to a Nazi regime?

The girl compares the council to a Nazi regime because the council thinks that what they are doing is right but it's actually wrong.

Using the video as an example and your knowledge of Apollonian v. Dionysian, how would Lord of the Flies have turned out different if there had been girls?

If there had been girls in Lord of the Flies, it would have turned out differently because the girls on Kid Nation seemed to have more reason and think things through more than the boys.

After watching the trailer, the narrator claims that it the town is entirely run by kids. Is this true?

The narrator says that the kids run the whole city, but we obviously know they do not. The children obtain rewards for doing the right things, which is given to them by adults. They have weekly games to decide the jobs in the town.  Also, there are assigned town meetings, which had to be run by adults, because children don’t go and sit to discuss what jobs they want to do.

How do the adults running the show provide Apollonian order for the kids?

When children are young, they do not want to be part of civilization, part of rules and regulations. Children want to run free and play games and live in a Dionysian world. Adults are the ones who make civilization. When you are older, you realize you need to have a system to run everything. The adults provide an Apollonian culture for the children.

In our group none of us would want to be included in Kid Nation.  We feel this way because it would be very hard and it would put a lot of stress on you.  Also at our age we would be some of the oldest kids there and we would have to take care of all of the younger kids.  We don't feel that we are prepared for us because we are not at the age where we know how to parent.

How is this similar to Lord of the Flies? How is it different?

I feel that at points in time it can be like Lord of the Flies and at times it can be the opposite of Lord of the Flies.  The kids of Lord of the Flies need to elect a leader hwich would be like Kid nation.  But also in Kid nation they have to run a city but in Lord of the Flies they just were worried about keeping order.

Greg is cursing out the children in the town. According to one of the girls, how does Greg exert power over the town? What is the danger in that?

He is powerful because he is older than the others and he is very strong. The danger in this is that he has power but the decisions he makes are selfish and he disagrees a lot with the order.

What Lord of the Flies character would you compare Greg to? (Mention how ego and id are at work here)

We would compare him to Jack because he doesn't agree with the leader of the group and is very violent. He uses Id much more than ego because he curses and yells instead of calmly solving the situation logically. Also, in a way, he is like Piggy because he seems to be the outcast of the group.

One of the girls says that “the town needs law and order.” How does Greg acting out show that order is breaking down in the town?

It shows that he is not being considerate of the rules of the town and of the other people in the town. For example, the little girl is scared of him and his cursing because she has not been exposed to that. At her young age, she shouldn't be introduced to that but he does it anyway.
