Island 1 Day 2

It was a challenge to get work done over the weekend, wasn’t it? Well, each member needs an assigned role. You have already gathered your supplies, explored the island, and created a map. Now you need to make plans for how to survive.

Section [06] Members

Look at the member page again, and add a third column to the member table that will be called “roles.” You should decide based on survival IQ and quality of contributions who will do what. You must also nominate and elect a leader. But first, write job descriptions for each role. Figure out how you will do this so it is fair for the rest of the sections. Remember, every member must still contribute to the wiki in order to get a grade.

Some of the roles you NEED to consider are:

  • Leader (one per island): the leader will not only have the final say, but he or she will also make sure every member is doing their part and contributing to their project. A leader’s main job will be to leave comments for the other groups. The Leader will take controll during emergencies.
  • Hunter gatherers: They will provide and maintain the food supply on the island. We will have a group of hunters, fishers, and berry-pickers. The hunter gatherers will clean and cook the food as well. They will make sure there is always a faire amount of food to survive.
  • Builders/maintainers of shelters: They will build and maintain the living compounds on the islands. The builders and maintainers will keeps track of the weather patterns. They will find a place for the inhabitants to go during emergences.
  • Water and firewood gatherers: They will sanitize the water from the freshwater streams and gather firewood. The water and firewood getherers will find a resource to store everything needed on the island.
  • Environmentalists: Keep track of the behavior of the island. Specifically, the volcano.

Last tip: it would be useful if the members of the same section are in a similar role, that way you can complete a task together. The leader can be from any section and contribute to their particular group as he or she wishes.

Section [9] Members

First, do you approve of the leader nominated and chosen by the previous group?

We all agree with the leader of our Island.

If not, nominate a new leader:

You now have been assigned roles, but for today, you are also the plan builders. You must come up with a plan of action for the following situations:

Medical emergency:

We would set up a "hospital"  near the stream, so we have a constant supply of clean water, and use the first aid kit to heal and treat all injuries. We would select a small group of people to staff the hospital to keep constant watch and care over all the injured people.

Hunting/Gathering Techniques: [you must specify what is in your emergency rations on Day 1]

The people in the hunter gathering group would have to routinely walk to the palm forest and gather coconuts.  To open them, it would be best to pit a thin but sharb silver of rock on one of the dark brown 'eyes' and drain the milk.  Next, wrap the rest of the coconut in a cloth and ducktape rocks to a branch and try to break the husk.  There are fish, so the letter opener can be attached to a spear so there can be 'spear fishing'.  Traps can catch wild boars and other wildlife

Possible Mutiny:

In Case of a possible mutiny, we would have an emergency meeting on the beach with the people who are still loyal to the leader, and execute the emergency plan which is: Create another small group to hunt out and capture the mutinee, while the rest of the people prepare restraints for the person using duct tape. After the person is captured and restrained, we would exile him to the other side of the island, with some supplies, until the survival group saw that he reformed and repented. However, if the offense was a major one, we would exile him to the volcano indefinitely without any supplies from the camp.

Attempts to get rescued:

In an attempt to get rescued, we would spell big messages on the beach in case a plane or helicopter happened to fly over the island. We would also keep a huge fire going 24/7 (with exception to bad weather) with wood gathered from the palm forest and the flint and steel that we were stranded with. Once the fire grabbed the attention of planes, we would use the laser flare to make sure the planes saw the island.

Tip:  Include how you will use the six tools and your island’s natural resources (as shown in the introduction page) to solve these problems.

Section [04] Members

First, do you approve of the leader nominated and chosen by the previous group?

We aprove of the chosen leader.

If not, nominate a new leader:

The shelters should be built between the stream and the volcano. We will be close to the water and the volcano should protect the huts from strong winds.. It will be away from the beach for hurricanes and tides.

It should kind of look like this with the palm tree leave ends wrapped together at the end with duct tape. The base should be built from fallen palm trees with notches carved in them so they fit together when they are stacked on top of each other. There should be about 4-6 shelters total. 1-3 people per shelter. <http://www.clarion-call.org/humor/images/island.jpg>

Next group, in case an emergency you should have everybody stop what they are doing and go straight to the beach so that the leader can explain what we are to do.

Section 06 and 09, you should think of any other necessary jobs that could be useful on the island.

Hey, we decided it would be best if there were small shelters scattered around the island. These would be by the beach (away from the ocean and beach but in walking distance), the stream (far enough away so that if it floods from bad weather there isn't danger) , next to the palm forest (far enough so that if a tree falls nothing will hit the shelter), and by the volcano (where it is relatively flat).

We also decided that we would move from shelter to shelter as a whole group, because the distances between all the shelters would be too long.

The only other big job we will need is hospital members to help heal people. We also may need everyone to help with shelter building, since we will need so many shelters.

Parker I think that the place to meet in case of an emergency should be at hte shelters because if the emergency is a storm then you definitely don't want to be at the beach.

We should change an environmentalist we only need one.

Coby there does not necessarily have to be a shelter for everybody, people can share.

Where should the shelters specifically be located? I think about 10-15 about 15 yards away from the stream on the forest side would be ideal.

Elizabeth has a good suggestion, however it would be helpful if one of us could create a map or rough estimate of where our shelters are going to be in the island.

Island 1, keep it up. Encourage all members to keep the conversation going.
