Island 4 Day 2

It was a challenge to get work done over the weekend, wasn't it? Well, each member needs an assigned role. You have already gathered your supplies, explored the island, and created a map. Now you need to make plans for how to survive.

Section [06] Members

Look at the member page again, and add a third column to the member table that will be called “roles.” You should decide based on survival IQ and quality of contributions who will do what. You must also nominate and elect a leader. But first, write job descriptions for each role. Figure out how you will do this so it is fair for the rest of the sections. Remember, every member must still contribute to the wiki in order to get a grade.

Some of the roles you NEED to consider are:

  • Leader (one per island): The leader will not only have the final say, but he or she will also make sure every member is doing their part and contributing to their project. A leader’s main job will be to leave comments for the other groups. They also assist the hunter/gatherers. In case of emergency, the Leader relays messages to other islands.   Section 06: We nominate Kelsie Augustin
  • Hunter gatherers: The hunter gatherers gather food for the tribe to sustain itself on. They can get food from many animals on the island such as wild boars and they can gather fruit and berries such as coconuts. They also have the job to fish for the tribe. In case of emergency, hunter gatherers can go fishing in the ocean where it is more dangerous, as compared to the lake.

  • Builders/maintainers of shelters: The builders work on building shelters. They can use the palm tree fronds to form rope to help with the building. In case of emergency such as bad weather, they have to come up with an emergency plan. They also build up protection for our shelters in case of wild boar attack.
  • Water and firewood gatherers: The water/ firewood gatherers are in charge of gathering supplies and water purification. In case of emergency, they can use the water purification drops or boil water in the metal cup. The water and firewood gatherers also gather water and firewood. They make trips to the lake, and also search for usable, dry firewood. Though the work is simple, it is necessary.

Last tip: it would be useful if the members of the same section are in a similar role, that way you can complete a task together. The leader can be from any section and contribute to their particular group as he or she wishes.

Section 09 Members

First, do you approve of the leader nominated and chosen by the previous group Yes, Kelsie is good, section 4 approves

If not, nominate a new leader:

You now have been assigned roles, but for today, you are also the plan builders. You must come up with a plan of action for the following situations:

Medical emergency:

  • Type 2 Diabetes, Stomach aches, diarrhea: Cactus fruit
  • Sun burn keep person out of sunlight, use plastic bag to make shade and give them water. Avoid dehydration!!!
  • Small abrasive injury Wipe injury down with an antibacterial wipe and let heal
  • Large Cut: Cut out strips from blankets and stem flow of bleeding by pressing. We have guaze in our first aid kit for this.
  • Broken Bones: Use trees/branches to make a splint and let heal
  • Major head trauma: If person is inconscious, put in bed out of light, and have someone check on them.
  • Death: The Body would be set afloat in the sea.
  • No Cannibalism - Unless there is not other food on the island, and the rest of the group is bordering on starvation.

Hunting/Gathering Techniques:

  • Cactus: Use a sharp object, such as the knife, to cut the cactus. This provides water and food. Also, cacti contain purified safe-to-drink water!
  • Coconuts: Make makeshift rope out of palm fronds and put a weight at one end. We can use this to climb trees.
  • Berries/natural resources: Designate gatherers to comb through the forest in search of usable resources
  • Fishing: Make a net out of palm fronds and use bait to trap fish
  • Hunting: Use spears made from sticks and have hunters rotate who roams the forest in search of boars and small animals. Bring back to main camp and cook over open fire

Possible Mutiny:

  •  Quarantine: Quarantine mutineer in a  wooden prison/cave until the rest of the people decide that the mutineer is to be set free
  1. For Minor Offenses - Mutineer gets assigned to unpopular jobs such as waste disposal
  2. For Major Offenses - The other islanders will convene to decide on a proper punishment.

Attempts to get rescued:

  • Signal Fire: - Build a large signal fire, its smoke will get attention from and planes or ships passing by. In the daytime, we use the mirror's reflections to signal to passing planes or ships.
  • Whistle: Used to get attention of rescuers

Tip:  Include how you will use the six tools and your island’s natural resources (as shown in the introduction page) to solve these problems.

Section [04] Members

First, do you approve of the leader nominated and chosen by the previous group?

Yes

If not, nominate a new leader:

You now have been assigned roles, but for today, you are contributing to plans surrounding shelter.

  • Our shelter will be in the cave. At night we roll a stone in front of entrance, just tall enough so that boars dont get in but we can get out at night if necessary. We have a small window/chimney in which smoke can go out. We have a main entrance, where we can all store food and come together as ISLAND 4. Palm fonds are used as "doors"/privacy. When there is less fresh fruit we can hang them from branches and let them dry out. The stream is by our cave is convient.
  • Visual Model

This is what the inside of our cave looks like.  Our cave consists of three large, adjacent rooms.  For sleeping purposes, we have a bed room and an extra room.  In the bed room, there are many beds which are made out of a wooden bade (from some local trees) and a lot of blankets which were brought on the plane.  In the common room, there is a fire place to keep us warm and a hole in the ceiling to release the smoke.  Finally, in our cave we have a supply of foods (such as fruit) for our diets.  This cave is very useful because it will protect the people from the elemens of the outdoors.

Nice job everyone. Its ok 2 make some mistakes but that's what happens sometimes. Its looking really good so far. Keep it up!

Good job, guys. The ideas of using the palm fronds for a net and to help climb trees was genius! The only thing that needs changed is the flashlight's section under "Attempts to get Rescued". We decided that we should switch the flashlight for the first-aid kit.

Once again, we're stuck with two maps.

Kelsie =] said

at 6:40 pm on Oct 27, 2008

Okay guys, just talk within your groups during English tomorrow about which map we should use and let me know which one we're keeping.

Mac said

at 7:04 pm on Oct 27, 2008

I think the map is good but shows some things that we dont need, such as a boys and girls room. Its a cave. Not a house. Also we need to clear up where the stream is because its not very clear

Mac said

at 7:05 pm on Oct 27, 2008

Also we could use one of those rooms for something better and more useful than sleeping such as storage or we can decide what to use it for in the future because we dont know what is going to happen to us.

Kelsie =] said

at 7:37 pm on Oct 27, 2008

What we need is for two people to volunteer to be mapmakers, they can collaborate together on one map and then they can show their map to everyone to agree and make suggestions on. Any volunteers?

DeAnna said

at 7:50 pm on Oct 27, 2008

I definetly agree with Mac and Kelsie on this one. I basically just copied the written one by whoever.

DeAnna said

at 7:58 pm on Oct 27, 2008

Anna and I could do that. LOL. Anna and DeAnna.

DeAnna said

at 8:12 pm on Oct 27, 2008

actually I'll be mapmaker

Kelsie =] said

at 8:28 pm on Oct 27, 2008

Okayy, DeAnna and Anna are now mapmakers too. You guys just have to work with each other to create one map and then you can email us all the map to use for the wiki. I'll make sure the Mrs. L knows that you guys worked together on it.

Mac said

at 10:27 pm on Oct 27, 2008

I think this is a really good idea, If you guys want me to help as a map maker I can do that also

Kelsie =] said

at 5:57 am on Oct 28, 2008

Okay, I'll add "mapmaker" as part of your job on the members list. We'll talk more about it in class today.

(Anna, if you want to be the final mapmaker just send me an email or tell me today. Thanks!)

Mac said

I was thinking since something might happen this friday I think it would be a good idea to have someone that backs up our leader such as a vice president would. Incase something does happen to our leader we would be prepared then and not have crazyness

Mac said

at 10:40 pm on Oct 28, 2008

Just a thought

Harsha Indian said

at 10:42 pm on Oct 28, 2008

Kelsey already sent an e-mail to both DeAnna and myself, saying that we should take over incase something happens. Good thought though!

Harsha Indian said

at 10:43 pm on Oct 28, 2008

The map looks great - listen I'm not much of an artist (to be blunt, I'm terrible), so I didn't really spring at the chance to draw our cave map. However, I'm willing to do most anything that doesn't require...uhh...artistic talent.

Mac said

at 10:47 pm on Oct 28, 2008

I'm with him on that one, but I would also be open for any job because i dont reallly have one right now.

Harsha Indian said

at 10:48 pm on Oct 28, 2008

Why can't we use the dead person...? Ok that may out there, but since he/she is already dead, why not use their body as "bait" for animals or something to help us? Instead of tossing out to the ocean, every resource is helpful and a human body (as nasty as that is) could be a valuable one...

Harsha Indian said

at 10:48 pm on Oct 28, 2008

"I'm with him on that one, but I would also be open for any job because i dont reallly have one right now."

^ Agreed

Mac said

at 10:48 pm on Oct 28, 2008

I nominate Blake

Mac said

at 10:50 pm on Oct 28, 2008

On that note, i say under group 9 we remove cannibalism

Mac said

at 10:52 pm on Oct 28, 2008

But harsha does make a good point that a dead person could make a good use, but either way we will have to despose of it some way the keep us from getting sick

Kelsie =] said

at 6:34 am on Oct 29, 2008

Hmm, we probably should use the dead person somehow, but we'll have to treat bodies differently. (i.e. we probably shouldn't use a body with an infectious disease for bait.)We'll add it to the chart during English today if Mrs. L gives us time to work on it. We'll probably have to go through a situations were we lose an island member, so good idea, Harsha. (and Mac!)

Kelsie =] said

at 6:39 am on Oct 29, 2008

On another note, make sure when you're working on the wiki, that you're working on only your group's section for the day. You can make minor changes to the other group's work, but don't completely encroach on their assignment. We have to be sure that everyone does equal work.

Suzie said

at 8:25 pm on Oct 29, 2008

I agree with Mac on the fact that the rooms can be used for other things than "boys and girls" rooms; we're already stranded and I don't think it would matter too much. I am confused on the second map; it seems as if the stream is inside the cave or goes through it, whereas on the other map for Day 1 it was alongside the cave. If there are "official mapmakers" I won't do anything, but if anything is needed, I can help.

Kelsie =] said

The map of the inside of the cave is going to be redrawn. DeAnna and Mac, check your first class

Harsha Indian said

at 4:49 pm on Oct 30, 2008

Ok, so which map are we using? I see 2 of inside the cave/shelter...

Kelsie =] said

at 6:49 pm on Oct 30, 2008

I sent DeAnna and Mac an email about the map. They should be making a new one, but I'll check.

jhowell said

Anna and I stayed up all night making those, we have are feelings hurt

jhowell said

at 2:59 pm on Oct 31, 2008

but seriously, can Anna and I put those back on there so we can have inside and outside of the cave, we can just keep all 3 of them, Mrs. L approved it.

Brigitte Leschhorn said

at 3:53 pm on Oct 31, 2008

Hold on, my dears. I suggested an idea, which was to include both pictures. You have to work out your miscommunication, Island 4. Address your leader. Your comments should be in complete sentences and diplomatic. The best way to express clarity is through good tone and good grammar.

DeAnna said
