Lord of the Flies Survival Game

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the difficulties involved in surviving
  • Understand the conflict involved in cooperating with other individuals different from you
  • To learn how to use a wiki effectively
  • To learn how to collaborate with members from other sections

Game Objectives:

  • To work as a team across sections to solve problems that arise
  • Ultimately, to find a way using your tools to get rescued

How it will work:

  1. You are assigned an island. You may only edit the content within the folder of your island
  2. There will be assigned "island days" in which you will work on your island wikis
  3. You will be working with groups from other sections assigned to the same island
  4. On "island days" you will be given a specific task to accomplish. Each group from each section will be responsible for a part of the task.
  5. You will be asked to make comments (of approval or criticism) after the completion of each task
  6. Grades will depend on how well you collaborate and communicate with your team members in all sections, as well as the content of you wiki folder.
  7. Certain tasks or comments will require you to do work at home.
  8. Rubric will be created by the students at a later time.

Instructions for "Island Days":

  1.  Go into the folder for your assigned island
  2. Go into the page of the specific day (i.e. day 1)
  3. Complete your task as a group
  4. Every member must make a comment on another section

Where to Begin:

  • Read "Introduction" page in your island folder
  • Then read and complete task for your section of "Day 1"

Challenge Winners

  • Will have excellent communication
  • Will complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Will NOT necessarily receive the highest grade
  • Will have all members engaged in the process
  • Will, ultimately, be rescued off the island
  • Will receive a grand prize to be determined by Ms. L

Media Literacy

Blogs

The purpose of blogs can include the following:

  • to inform (like news media)
  • to educate
  • to collaborate
  • to express views and opinions
  • to share an experience

Not all bloggers are reliable narrators. Reliable narrators are ones that you trust and ones who provide good information and a good perspective on the topic matter. These bloggers have good grammar, organization, flow, and tone. They do not exaggerate or purposely embellish details. Unreliable bloggers will often have bad grammar, sporadic flow, and disorganized entries. They often read like diary entries rather than blog entries. Beware that some blogs are used as "public" diaries as in the case of Sandwichgirl.com instead of more informational blogs like Cristina-on-Ice.

Reality Television

Some reminders for all groups:
For those of you who have First Aid Kits and Emergency Rations, you must specify the contents of both of these ASAP.
Pictures must also have links underneath them for citations. This will be important when creating a citation page near the end of the project.
